This is the quickest recipe which I use to make sambar. It turns out really well. Give it a try and let me know.
Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup toor dal (lentil)
- 1.5 cup water
- 1/2 tsp ginger , grated
- 1 big tomato , chopped into large chunks
- 1 small onion , chopped into large chunks
- 1/2 capsicum ( bell pepper ) - chopped into large chunks
- Few curry leaves
- 1 small green or red chili
- 1 tsp sambar masala
- salt to taste
- Coriander leaves
For tempering
- 2 tsp oil
- 1 tsp mustard seeds
- Pinch of hing (asafoetida)
- 1/2 tsp garlic paste
- Pinch of turmeric
- 1 tbsp tamarind juice
- 1 tsp sambar masala
Method:
- Mix all the ingredients in a pressure cooker as shown above. Cook it for 5-6 whistles till the dal is boiled completely. The time will depend on the pressure cooker type and make.
- Open the cooker and set it aside.
- Now prepare the tempering. Heat oil in a pan and add the mustard seeds and hing. Once the mustard seeds crackle add rest of the tempering ingredients. Pour the tempering over the boiled dal.
- Add extra water if needed and cook on a low flame for 10 minutes.
