Doodhi Chana Dal Shaak

(Bottlegourd and Gram Dal Curry )

1 cup chana dal, soaked overnight
1 lauki ( bottlegourd/doodhi) diced
2 button red chillies
1/2 tsp cumin seeds
1/2 tsp mustand seeds
pinch of hing (asafoetida)
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
2 tsp garam masala
1tbsp ginger-garlic paste
salt to taste
1 tsp oil


  • Heat oil in a pan

  • Put cumin seeds, mustard seeds, button red chillies and a pinch of hing

  • When mustard seeds start cracking, add ginger-garlic paste.

  • Add the soaked dal and diced lauki.

  • Add turmetic powder, garam masala powder and salt.

  • Add little water and cook with lid covered for 25 mins till dal and lauki is soft. Add more water if required.

  • Ready to serve

Serving Suggestions:
Can be served with parathas or phulka


This is how I make it, but to save time you can pressure cook the dal and lauki with all the spices for 2 whistles.
